Diagnostic Ultrasound for Varicose Veins McAllen
Patients often seek treatment of varicose veins due to their concerns of the unsightly, bulging visible varicose veins or spider veins. Often, these varicose veins are painful in and of themselves.
For patients with symptoms of leg heaviness, leg swelling, restless leg syndrome, or a history of a leg ulcer, the presence of saphenous vein reflux (or venous insufficiency) must be determined. This is accomplished with Duplex Ultrasound Technology.
Surprisingly, even many physicians are unaware that modern treatments for varicose veins exist that can help patients with leg pain, heaviness, and swelling. When doctors do recognize the presence of varicose vein disease they often send their patients to a radiology imaging center or a vascular lab for the ultrasound testing. This is very inconvenient for the patient, and often these non-specialized imaging centers do not perform the ultrasound examination for venous insufficiency correctly, thereby misdiagnosing patients.
RGV Cosmetic Surgery & Vein Care is the Valley’s comprehensive varicose vein treatment center. As such, we offer the entire spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic options for vein care in the privacy of our boutique office settings. All new patient consultations include a thorough duplex ultrasound in-house to determine the extent of venous disease so that the interaction with the doctor can be meaningful, and a thorough treatment plan can be established. It is important for patients to understand that varicose vein disease is complex, and complete treatment requires a team approach. The venous system of the lower extremities is complex and includes the deep system within the muscles, which is the important system that ultimately returns the blood back to the heart. Outside the muscles is the superficial venous system of the legs, which is what is affected by varicose vein disease. Patients can see the very superficial spider veins and varicose veins, but an ultrasound duplex is required to view the greater saphenous veins (GSV). The greater saphenous veins run deeper from the inner ankle to the groin where they connect with the deep vein system. Short saphenous veins (SSV) run deep from behind the calf to the behind the knee where they connect with the deep vein system. These saphenous veins have one-way valves that facilitate the movement of blood up against gravity. If these valves malfunction (reflux, or insufficiency), the blood fails to return up towards the heart, and instead pools in the legs – causing swelling, heaviness, increased pressure creating varicose veins, impaired circulation, thickening of the skin, and ultimately leg ulcers and superficial vein clots or bleeding.
The treatment of varicose vein disease must begin with the saphenous veins if the ultrasound identifies reflux. Eliminating reflux with EndoVenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is the modern, minimally invasive alternative to historic vein stripping surgery. After that, treatment then focuses on the remaining visible and painful varicose veins with MicroPhlebectomy treatments, until finally Sclerotherapy is indicated for any remaining spider veins.
