Fat Transfer/Butt Augmentation in McAllen
Butt augmentation with liposuction and fat transfer is very popular in Brazil, and as a result this procedure became known as the “Brazilian Butt Lift”. Even though it’s not really a lifting procedure, filling the butt with a patient’s own fat gives the advantage of augmenting the size and fullness of the butt and also lifting the butt. An added advantage is that the donor liposuction from the abdomen, flanks, outer thighs and inner thighs also helps further enhance to total body contour and also makes the butt look larger and shapelier. This can also be combined with a tummy tuck.
Dr. Rodriguez has refined his techniques to create what our patients now call the “Brazilian Bubble Butt Lift®.” The concept is that patients really want a result that accents the beautiful curves from their lower back to their upper butt both on the sides and from behind. They want a “Bubble Butt”, not just a big butt. By using VASER liposuction to harvest the fat, platelet rich plasma (PRP) to enrich the fat graft, and special processing methods to prepare the fat from the patients own body for injection, Dr. Rodriguez minimizes the amount of fat graft lost after fat transfer, thereby ensuring that patients get the most beautiful result possible with the amount of donor fat available.
Typically, patients can expect a 75-80% fat graft survival or “take”. This means that what you have remaining, once the post-surgical swelling subsides and after the fat takes at three months, will be your permanent result. In addition, Dr. Rodriguez’s advanced injection techniques and closed collection and processing systems, minimize the risks for infection or any lumpy-bumpy results. The only thing patients have to remember is that fat transfer to the butt is not a treatment for cellulite. VASER liposuction not only enhances the quality of the fat for fat transfer but VASER also enhances the skin tightening from the treated areas for the donor liposuction creating a more beautiful result.
Obviously, patients must have enough fat for a good fat transfer result. Surgeons at other centers have abused many beautiful, thin patients with “fat transfer” procedures for butt augmentation because the patients were simply not candidates for the procedure. For these patients, gluteal implants provide the most beautiful and consistent results.

The Brazilian Bubble Butt Lift® Procedure Details:
The Brazilian Bubble Butt Lift® is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and can last between three and a half to four and a half hours depending on the amount of fat removed, number of areas treated, and the volume of fat transfer desired. Dr. Rodriguez typically recommends VASER liposuction to the abdomen, flanks (“love handles”) and back. For thinner women who need liposuction to additional areas to harvest enough fat for a good result, we often find that additional VASER liposuction to the inner, thighs and sometimes the arms is often helpful. VASER liposuction not only enhances the quality of the fat for fat transfer but VASER also enhances the skin tightening from the treated areas for the donor liposuction creating a more beautiful result.
Just as for gluteal implants, an important component of the Brazilian Bubble Butt Lift® with liposuction and fat transfer for gluteal contour enhancement is not only the fat transfer for gluteal augmentation but also the liposuction to the flanks and sometimes also the outer thighs to sculpt the gluteal contour. In fact, it is this “LIPOSCULPTING” around the buttock that will frame where the fat will be injected and creates the beautiful result with the fat transfer. This helps to lift the butt and creates a harmonious, sculpted result.
The Brazilian Bubble Butt Lift® is performed in an operating room setting either in a hospital or fully accredited outpatient surgery center. I do not believe in “awake liposuction” and I have had too many patients come to me to try to fix their contour defects after trying to have their liposuction procedures performed at other practices or “medspas”. Sadly, it’s very difficult to fix bad lipo, and once the fat has been removed, it’s not possible to find more fat to inject.
The procedure involves infiltration of tumescent solution into the areas for the donor liposuction, pretreatment of the fat with the VASER, and then gentle donor liposuction with micro-cannulas to minimize any injury to the fat cells. The fat cells are collected into a closed, sterile system and carefully processed in preparation for injection and transfer. All impurities are removed and I use platelet rich plasma (PRP) to “super-charge” the fat graft and enhance the graft take. Specialized instruments are utilized to inject the fat into the butt in a micro-aliquot technique. The fat is carefully injected in multiple layers to maximize graft take and ensure a beautiful smooth contour. Our closed loop injection system also helps ensure sterility and prevent infections. The fat is injected through tiny incisions, which are practically invisible when healed. Every case is different but on average the amount of fat required for each buttock is about 600 to 800 milliliters (mL) of pure fat. Thus, for both sides, about 1,200 – 1,600 mL is needed, which equals to about 2 ½ to 3 ½ pounds of fat.
The art of fat transfer is not simply just adding more fat to the butt; what is extremely important is where and how the fat is injected. This is what determines whether the augmented butt is full and harmonious (a nice “Bubble Butt”), as well as how much of the added fat will “take” as opposed to being reabsorbed by the body. Therefore, it is important to ensure that your surgeon is very well trained in this procedure and that the technique used ensures the best placement of fat and maximizes the amount of fat that will remain in the buttocks.
After the procedure, the buttocks will be swollen and this swelling will subsequently subside over the next 6-12 weeks. We ask that patients minimize laying or sitting on their butt during the first 2-3 weeks after surgery to protect the injected fat. It is important to keep in mind that as the initial post-surgical swelling subsides, size of the new buttocks will decrease a little. In addition, because of the expected 70-80% fat graft survival or “take”, the final result cannot be fully appreciated until at least 3 months after surgery.
Some myths exist regarding fat transfer. The most widespread myth is that fat transfer will result in a lumpy or bumpy surface. Another myth is that fat transfer will create cellulite. In fact, just the opposite is true, and fat is frequently used to correct irregularities and deformities in the skin. Therefore, after a fat transfer into your buttocks, your skin and rear will feel very natural since it is your own fat that has been reincorporated into your body. Although it is important for patients to realize that liposuction and fat transfer are NOT treatments for cellulite.
What about recovery?
Recovery from a fat transfer into the buttocks depends primarily on the length of time it takes for you to recuperate from areas that received liposuction. Fortunately, recuperation from liposuction surgery is relatively easy. Most patients awaken with little or no pain as a result of the tumescent local anesthesia and are mobile immediately after liposuction although an extra day or two of bed rest may be needed when large amounts of fat are removed. Keep in mind that healing is a gradual process. Initially, you may feel somewhat stiff and sore. The day after surgery, you should be up and walking around to promote normal circulation. You should begin normal activity as soon as possible to reduce post-operative complications. Light exercise is usually permitted within a few days.
You should expect some bruising, swelling, and pain after your procedure. It is also normal if you feel as though you have lost sensation in the areas treated. As your nerves begin to regenerate, feeling and sensation should return to normal. Swelling may linger for several months. Pain medication will be prescribed for discomfort. However, you should contact us immediately if you begin to have severe pain. The swelling tends to subside most dramatically after the first 4 to 6 weeks, although the final result and skin tightening after liposuction takes 4 to 6 months. There will most likely be some bruising after your procedure but this tends to go away during the first two weeks. You will wear special elastic compression garments to apply pressure, minimize swelling, and provide support while healing. These garments also assist in the retraction of the skin. These garments can be somewhat hot and uncomfortable, but they must be worn continuously for the first 6 to 8 weeks after surgery, except when showering, to maximize your cosmetic outcome. After the first 6 to 8 weeks, the compression garment can be used for support and comfort as desired for an additional 3 weeks.
You will be sent home in a black colored compression garment that will resist staining from the leaking of the tumescent fluid the first 2 to 3 days after surgery and which has zippers to make it easier to put on after showering. You will wear this black garment for the first 5 to 7 days, after which you will switch to a flesh colored garment once the leaking has stopped and your initial swelling has gone down. This second garment has no zippers and is to be worn for the remaining 4 to 6 weeks. The zippers are to be avoided as they can create contour defects along the sides.
You may shower on the second or third day following surgery but no bathing, swimming, or hot tubs are allowed until 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Depending on the number of areas treated, you will be ready to return to office work in 3 to 5 days and more strenuous activities at 10 to 14 days. You may increase your activity daily until full activity is resumed at 2 to 4 weeks. Avoid the sun until all bruising has subsided. Sunscreen should be used routinely. Patients should note that it is easy to get sunburned during recovery because of temporarily diminished sensation.
Your New Look
Your results will be recognizable almost immediately after liposuction and Brazilian Bubble Butt Lift® and will continue to improve gradually as the swelling subsides. The unwanted and unflattering bulges that prevented you from wearing your favorite styles of clothing will be gone.
You will have a new, slimmer contour and your buttocks will be fuller, more lifted and shapelier!
With your diligent attention to a healthy diet, moderate exercise, and a weight management program, your treated areas should look great and retain their sculptured appearance. If you don’t take care of yourself and gain weight, you will gain weight not only in the areas that were not treated but also in the areas that were treated with liposuction, and in these areas the weight gain will be irregular.
During your consultation you should provide all of your medical history and list all of the medications, vitamins, and herbs you are taking even if you do not think they are important.
Some tips that may help shorten your recovery time and decrease your chances of complications are:
- Discontinue using Aspirin (including medications that contain Aspirin), Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, St. John’s Wort, Vitamin E and other supplements as directed. These act as blood thinners and could cause excessive bruising, bleeding or other complications. We will give you a complete list of medications and herbal supplements to avoid prior to your procedure.
- Stop smoking for at least two weeks before and one week after surgery, as nicotine can impair circulation and healing.
- Do not drink alcohol in excess for two weeks before your liposculpting procedure and one week after the surgery.
- Drink a lot of water in the days leading up to your liposculpting procedure.
To make your recovery easier and more comfortable be sure to:
- Arrange for someone to take you home and take care of you for at least the first day.
- Fill your prescriptions and place them within easy reach of where you will be resting.
- Place plenty of pillows, a spare compression and hand towels for drainage nearby.
